We may not have the power to change the organizations we are in to make them more inclusive, but we can still show up for LGBTQIA2S+ people. In workshops with service members and government personnel, we focus on how we can use language in an inclusive way despite serving in a very binary system.
The design of these sessions allows all participants to familiarize themselves with the concept of Gender Identity and how folks may experience gender outside the gender binary. Building on this, the class will explore how and why we make assumptions about peoples’ identities without even realizing it. The second half of the class is dedicated to how we can include people with our language and stop ourselves from making assumptions about people’s identity, even while in a binary system.
At the completion of this workshop, participants will be prepared to:
- Engage in conversations with fellow service members, co-workers, and the public about Gender Identity.
- Understand that all Gender Identities are valid.
- Understand the importance of Gender-Inclusive Language.
- Understand how to apply Gender-Inclusive Language.
